Destination: Tulus, South Darfur State, Sudan

Because mine is an office job I have to make a special effort to get out to the "field". During my most recent stay in Darfur I traveled with our education team to the village of Tulus, south of Nyala. We are providing new and rehabilitated classrooms in Tulus and surrounding areas.

The 3.5 hour drive from Nyala included crossing two rivers. This was the bigger of the two. Watching truck #1 make it to the other side gave me some peace of mind before we headed across. Between Pakistan and now Sudan I have developed a great admiration for the Toyota Hilux!

We got some rain during the three days we were in Tulus so the roads were actually a bit worse on the return trip. Our truck got stuck in the mud once and the other drivers had to rescue us! Of course, as I write this I am aware that this totally blows what I just said about peace of mind watching the trucks in front of us! I do; however, still have faith in the Toyota Hilux!

A little more of the landscape. About the only thing I could compare it to would be 3.5 hours of driving across a pasture. It was all dirt roads. No signs. A lot of the time it was a matter of keeping the tires in the preexisting ruts!

This was my attempt to photograph a termite mound from the window of a moving vehicle! Some of the termite mounds were huge!
