Random observations...

A few posts ago I mentioned that approximately 70% of the roads in Khartoum are unpaved. This makes life very interesting when it rains. Lots of mud! I should also mention that there is no drainage system in the city...so...lots of puddles. We've seen some rain and thunder storms in the past week or so which I'm told is quite unusual before rainy season officially begins.

In the center of this photo you'll notice some beds outside. When it's really hot lots of people choose to sleep outdoors. I've noticed this in both Khartoum and Nyala.

I was in Nyala on my day off last week (Friday). It was a sunny day so I opened the metal windows of my room, kept the A/C going and sat in the easy chair switching between work and reading. I know...you'll think most of the cool air went out the window, but it really didn't! Speaking of metal windows...I felt a little nervous during the thunder storms that went through...metal conducts electricity, right?

The sky when I came upstairs to my apartment tonight.
